17. 20 Journalism Scholarships to be Awarded for a 2-day symposium in Chicago, Feb 25, 2011
IMPACT OF THE ECONOMIC CRISIS ON AMERICAN FAMILIES:
Applications are now being taken
All costs covered to attend this specialized two-day symposium in Chicago

The SNA Foundation and the Associated Press Managing Editors have been awarded a McCormick Foundation grant to conduct a special two-day symposium. The symposium will educate community journalists on how to uncover local stories on the impacts of the current economic crisis on the American family.

The symposium will take a deep dive into this subject and will feature top speakers from the academic world, as well as journalists who cover highly-specialized aspects of this topic. The ultimate goal is to provide scholarship recipients with a host of tools and information to better cover the topic at a local level in their communities. Follow-up webinars with symposium attendees will also be part of this comprehensive learning experience.

Scholarship applications are due by February 25; click here to access the application form and information. The symposium takes place April 5 – 6 in Chicago (air, hotel and meals are included). Special thanks to the Sun-Times Media Group for hosting this event.

Editors and reporters are eligible to apply. Special consideration will be given to those who are in a position to drive the coverage of this topic at their newspaper. Depending on the size of the paper, this may be the editor, an assignment editor or a reporter. These scholarships are only being awarded to community journalists who work at daily newspapers with a circulation of 100,000 or less or for a weekly group of newspapers. A number of slots have been reserved for weekly newspaper editors and for smaller dailies. The goal is to have a diverse audience.

The symposium presents a one-of-a-kind learning experience at a very in-depth level. The cost to develop and implement this program is $35,000 (the amount of the McCormick grant). Attendees will be treated to an extremely special experience that will pay off for years to come.

“We are very grateful to the McCormick Foundation,” said Nancy Lane, President of SNA and the SNA Foundation. “This provides a wonderful opportunity to educate community journalists on a very important topic during a time when training dollars are tight at most companies. We are also grateful to APME for co-sponsoring this grant with us and providing invaluable assistance with the program.”

“We are thrilled the McCormick Foundation saw merit in this program and we are greatly appreciative of their funding,” said APME President Hollis Towns. “It’s also an honor to have an opportunity to partner with a great organization like SNA with a common mission of helping newspapers break new reporting ground on a topic that affects everyone.”

The grant is made possible by the McCormick Foundation’s Specialized Reporting Institute. Each year, McCormick funds various seminars to educate and inform journalists on how to cover these narrow but critically important topics. Past topics have included: how to cover the BP oil spill, immigration and covering the Olympics.

SNA and APME will also host free educational webinars after the symposium to share with the entire industry best practices and some of the lessons learned.

Click here to access the scholarship application form and information. All applications plus required materials must be submitted by Friday, February 25 to SNA Foundation headquarters atsna@suburban-news.org.

13. Do share your memories of Marine Drive, Mumbai
Marine Drive in Mumbai, with its windswept promenade, sweeping row of Art Deco buildings, and where many citizens take in a breath of fresh air and view the daily sunsets, is under threat.

From builders in collusion with politicians and corrupt government officials, who are working systematically to destroy Mumba’s iconic sea-front.

The last few years have seen numerous amendments and attempts to lift the legal protection available to this heritage percinct precinct from the CRZ and Heritage Regulations for Mumbai.

Are we soon going to be left with only memories of the “Queen’s Necklace”?

Amitabh Bachan has recently written on his blog about his memories of Marine
Drive. Read at http://bigb.bigadda.com/?p=7060

What are your favourite memories of Marine Drive? Do share your thoughts and
memories. Send these to info@karmayog.org. These will be compiled and displayed on the Karmayog website.

Regards,
Vinay

PS: If you would like to help a group of citizens fighting to save Marine Drive, do mention that in an email and send us your contact details.

11. Siddhartha Gautam Film Festival 2010, ORISSA, ENTRIES CLOSE AUGUST 18th, 2010
Siddhartha Gautam Film Festival welcomes entries for the Orissa chapter of
its sixth edition!
The festival will be held in Bhubaneswar, and then go ‘mobile’ to other venues in the state in early September 2010.
The festival will also include the announcement of SAATHII Rainbow Film Awards 2010.
It is being organized by Sampark, a civil society advocacy forum to advance the health and rights of sexual minorities and people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Orissa.

Siddhartha Gautam and the film festival
The festival is organized annually in memory of the pioneering activist Siddhartha Gautam and seeks to generate awareness and dialogue on gender, sexuality, HIV, sexual and
reproductive health, and human rights issues. Siddhartha was a lawyer and human rights activist and worked on a variety of issues related to discrimination against vulnerable groups of people in India. He was one of the first persons in India to talk about sexuality and HIV/AIDS as human rights issues, and started AIDS Bhedbhav Virodhi Andolan, the first Indian AIDS activist group, in New Delhi in 1989-90.

The event is an effort to continue Siddhartha’s engagement with human rights issues, and through it, pay tribute to his vision and spirit. It is a humble contribution to remember and take forward the pioneering work done by Siddhartha to promote and protect the rights of sexual minorities and PLHIV. In particular, the film festival tries to support and encourage Indian filmmakers, films produced in India and those that focus on the Indian, Indian Diaspora and South Asian contexts.

Film festival history
The festival was first organized in Kolkata in 2003 by SAATHII (also a member and secretariat of Sampark) and its partner agencies. It was inspired by a similar festival organized by The Friends of Siddhartha group in New Delhi each year from 1993 to 2003. Over the years, the festival has become a multi-venue, weeklong event that reaches out to audiences in both urban and rural areas in West Bengal and Orissa. It made a debut in Orissa in 2007 – in Bhadrak district, the first ever venue for the festival outside West Bengal and where SAATHII started mobile film shows, adding another innovation to the festival agenda.

Film festival theme
This year the festival will aim to highlight and support legal efforts to protect the rights of PLHIV and decriminalize same-sex love and sexual minorities in India. The films will be seen by a diverse audience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, inter-sexed, Kothi and Hijra individuals; people infected or affected by HIV; social workers; health care providers; government officials; college and university students; and media persons. Families and friends of sexual minorities and PLHIV will be especially welcome.

SAATHII Rainbow Film Awards 2010
We are also happy to announce the 3rdedition of the SAATHII Rainbow Film Awards. Initiated in 2005, this award is the first of its kind in India that honours *Indian films* portraying sexual minorities, their health and development concerns, and actors in the roles of sexual minority characters. The main aim of the award is to make the ‘voices of sexual minorities’ heard by filmmakers and convey the message that sexual minorities have an opinion on the films that portray them. These opinions should be taken seriously by the filmmakers and other artists involved in the making of films, so that the portrayal of sexual minorities becomes more sensitive and mature.

This year the award will be decided by a five-member jury of sexual minority and PLHIV community leaders, health and development workers, and media experts. The award winners will be given a trophy depicting the ‘rainbow of human sexuality’. The awards will be announced in three categories:
Best feature film portraying sexual minority characters and issues
Best feature film actor in the role of a sexual minority character
Best documentary film focussing on sexual minority issues

Films produced in India and released in the period May 2007 to July 2010 will be eligible for the awards. Films in any genre (shorts, documentaries, docu-features, feature films and music videos) and in any Indian language with English sub-titles will be eligible. The decisions on the awards will be taken at least a week prior to the film festival, but the awards are likely to be announced on the final day of the festival in Bhubaneswar. The
names of the jury members will also be made known on that day.

Call for entries for general screening and awards
Filmmakers interested in participating are requested to send their films with the following
details:
a) Format: DVD formats (compatible with Indian systems)
b) Documents : (i) Letter mentioning permission for general screening and, if applicable, willingness to participate in the SAATHII Rainbow Film Awards; (ii) Film synopsis (film title, genre, production / release year, duration, director and producers’ names, film summary and filmmaker profile summary); and (iii) Full contact information (e-mail, phone, postal address)
c) Still images: Please submit one or two digital stills from the film, or computer soft copy of the film DVD cover. We will also be approaching a number of filmmakers whose productions are already available in SAATHII’s reference libraries in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

Please note that there is no entry fee for participation. All films – whether for general screening or the awards section – will be subject to selection by the Film Festival Organizing Committee. Unless otherwise indicated, all films submitted will be included in SAATHII’s reference libraries which together constitute one of the largest resources in eastern India for material on sexual and reproductive health, HIV and human rights.

10. AIDS INDIA, CALL FOR ABSTRACTS, Dateline:September 15th, 2010
Guidelines for Abstracts Submission
General Information
Abstracts should be submitted electronically, using the guidelines below to Alberto Aguilera (aaguiler@health. usf.edu) on or before September 15th, 2010. Abstracts should be in Arial, 12 point, typeface, with the title in boldface. The name of the presenting author should be underlined. The abstract text is limited to 250 words and the entire submission must fit on a single page. Questions may be directed to the Conference Coordinator, Alberto Aguilera aaguiler@health. usf.edu

Abstract Title
The abstract should have a short, specific title (containing no abbreviations) that indicates the nature of the investigation. Title should be in boldface font.
Author Name(s)
· The name of the primary/presenting author should be underlined.
· Individuals should not submit more than one abstract as presenting author.
· There is no limit to the number of abstracts an author’s name may appear on.
Abstract Text
· Abstracts should be structured and organized to include the following:
o Background/rationale
o Methods
o Results
o Conclusion
· Use generic drug names (brand name may be included in parentheses) .
· Do not begin sentences with numerals.
· Standard abbreviations may be used without definition. Nonstandard abbreviations (kept to a minimum) must be placed in parentheses after the first use of the word or phrase abbreviated.
· Abstracts are limited to 250 words. This includes the text plus any graphic/table, but not the title or authors. The entire submission must fit on one page.

Traps to Avoid
1. Typographical errors are irritating to most readers.
2. Don’t cite references in the abstract.

Additional Information
The University of South Florida-AITRP, USA and The National AIDS Research Institute, Pune, India announce
The Conference on Translational Research in HIV/AIDS in India (TRAI)
12 – 15 January 2011
Vivanta by Taj – Goa, India
Early Registration: 9/15/2010
Abstract Submission Deadline: 9/15/2010

The mission of the TRAI Conference is to bring together all HIV/AIDS International Training Research Programs working in India for the purpose of training established and new to the field scientists by sharing the latest information on basic and translational aspects of HIV/AIDS relevant to India and creating conditions conducive for networking and collaboration among these groups and maximizing HIV research and training agenda in the Indian subcontinent.
Translational Research is the movement of discoveries in basic research to applications at the clinical level. To ensure new discoveries lead to improved public health, clinical science needs to implement biomedical discoveries; develop, test, and bring new prevention strategies into medical practice more rapidly; catalyze change – lower barriers between disciplines; and encourage creative and innovative approaches. There remains a huge gap in translating research conducted in developed nations to the HIV epidemic in underdeveloped and developing countries and presents unique challenges. In this first TRAI US-India Conference the goal is to discuss the advances in basic and clinical research and how they can be translated in India.
TRAI conference will have two major tracks: a basic track and a translational track. Keynote addresses and papers will highlight the work of regional prevention research scientists, policymakers, and Indian-U.S. research partnerships, practitioners with evaluated programs or running programs with potential for evaluation.

A public foundation opened in 1990 and funded by the State of Baden-Wurttemberg, the Akademie Schloss Solitude operates an international residency program awarding live/work fellowships to artists. More than 900 artists from around 100 countries have developed and advanced projects at the Akademie since its opening in 1990, creating a close-knit, global network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year. The Akademie persues an intense exchange between artistic and scientific disciplines. With the art, science & business program the transfer of knowledge and experience between the arts, the sciences and economics can be deepened to create new synergies of creativity, inventiveness and management.

International artists are invited to apply from the following disciplines: Architecture (design, landscape architecture, urban planning), Visual Arts (including performance art), Performing Arts (stage design, dramatic texts, dramaturgy, musical theater, performance, direction, drama, dance), Design (fashion, costume, product and furniture design, visual communication), Literature (essay, criticism, poetry, prose, translation), Music/Sound (interpretation, sound installation, sound performance, composition) and Video/Film/New Media (including video installation). Persons up to 35 or if older who have completed a university or college degree within the past five years are welcome to apply. Currently enrolled university or college students (at the time of application) will not be considered for selection. Each fellowship recipient is granted Euro 1,000 per month, in addition to free lodging. 7. HISK Open Studios & Call for Applications: Dateline for submissions: June 15/2010

HISK – Higher Institute for Fine Arts
Advanced Studies & Practice-based Research in Visual Arts

The Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) organizes postgraduate education in Flanders in the field of the audiovisual and visual arts. It provides approximately twenty-five young artists from Belgium and abroad with a studio of their own for the duration of two years along with specific, tailor-made guidance.
At the HISK, emphasis lies mainly on individual practice with an international focus. The visiting lecturers are crucial. Artists, curators, critics and theoreticians pay individual studio visits at regular intervals. There are also frequent visits to significant art events and lectures, seminars and workshops are provided. The HISK also offers technical facilities and production opportunities.
Thanks to the unique HISK concept, the participants are given every opportunity to invest in critical research of their work in order to situate it within a broader artistic, cultural and societal context.
At the end of the two-year working period, the participant receives a certificate of ‘Laureate of the HISK’. The HISK is officially recognized as Higher Institute and is financed by the Flemish Community – Ministry of Education and supported by the City of Ghent.
Since 1997, 159 laureates have graduated from the HISK. The largest part of them are currently building up a successful professional career in the Belgian and international art world.
In 2010, the candidate-laureates working at the HISK come from Japan, South Africa, Peru, India, Israel, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. An international jury selected them from more than a hundred candidates.
The Open Studios give the candidate-laureates the opportunity to undergo a confrontation with the public and to generate a great deal of feedback from visual arts professionals. It also offers the audience access to and an insight into the artistic development of a young generation of artists who will play a part in shaping the future of the arts landscape.
APPLICATIONS FOR CANDIDATES 2010-2011
Artists who have already obtained a Masters degree in Fine Art or an equivalent qualification are eligible to apply to the HISK. Exceptions can be made.
The admission committee is composed of international visiting lecturers from a variety of backgrounds. They make a pre-selection from the submitted portfolios and the candidates who make it through are invited for an interview regarding their motivations and expectations. After a period of evaluation and careful consideration, the committee then makes a decision as to whether the applicant is suitable.
The conceptual and visual qualities in the works submitted by applicants are considered to be more important than style, material or technique. Participants are expected to have a strong commitment to conducting critical research within their respective fields of interest. At the same time, they should aim towards locating their practice within a broader perspective of social and cultural environments. Candidates are also expected to make a contribution to the activities of the HISK as a whole. This interaction is seen to be an important forum of exchange and development.
Basic criteria for assessment are:
– The quality of the submitted work
– Evidence of a potential to explore various aesthetic possibilities
– The degree to which the work distinguishes itself from overt influences
– The coherence of the body of work
– The social/political relevance of the work
– The quality of presentation in the submitted portfolio (both text and images)
– Motivation for choosing the HISK
– Willingness to be involved in the HISK programme and ability to set aside time for this
– Ability to speak about your work and thinking around it
– The potential to grow within the HISK programme, both on an artistic and a personal level
– Evidence of sufficient maturity to be able to work independently
