To mark World Dance Day we present
“THE SONG OF MOHENJODARO”
A ballet conceived and choreographed by
Sheema Kermani
This ballet was premiered in 1992 to rave reviews and great acclaim in the press and media. It has been performed many times and always to packed halls.
The ballet tells the story of Peelu, a young man and his fiancée Bhairvi who wants to become a dancer. Peelu forbids her to dance and is very angry. His friend Bihag tries to cheer him up and they go down the river Indus and down in ‘Time’ to Mohenjodaro of 2500 B.C.. What happens there and what happens when he returns back to present times? This is The Song of Mohenjodaro – an exhilarating one and half hour of classical and folk dance, drama and music! Come and watch and bring your friends and enjoy.

This evening event will bring together writers, students, scholars and the community in the celebration of the vibrant life of Punjabi at UBC and in Greater Vancouver.
Alyssa Ayres (Ph.D. Chicago) has been invited to present on the life of Punjabi in Pakistan, and a panel discussion of local Punjabi media experts will be held. Winners of a student Punjabi essay competition and a local writer, Gurcharan Rampuri, will be given awards.
The event will be accompanied by a more general celebration of South Asian studies at UBC, featuring plays and other student performances in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Punjabi (in that order) on the afternoon of April 4 (from 1:30-4:30 pm).

Chitrkar film club is formed by a group of young film makers and plans to share best of world cinema with film enthusiasts.
Neela Parbat is one of the few experimental films made in Pakistan. Noted journalist, intellectual and writer Ahmad Bashir directed the film, Ustad Piarang composed the music while Roshan Ara Begum was one of the playback singers. Renowned film actress Panna performed classical dances for the film.
The film was an utter flop on the box office and was only screened for a few days.
The film editor of ‘Neela Parbat’ Aman Mirza, and Mrs. Mehmooda Ahmad Bashir, playback singer of the film will be present to share their experiences of the making of ‘Neela Parbat’.

Spiritual Journey
Life is a journey in the serpentine lanes of world that surrounds us. We come across different landscapes of joy happiness pain and suffering but we go on. Multitude of ordinary Indians has their own way of sailing through the river of karma.
Renu has painted portraits of beatitude, peace and equanimity. Most of the works are monochromatic and they have the emblems of Hindu spirituality. Renhu’s stylized figures are three dimensional evoking sculptural quality. These figures bring to mind mendicants of yore or may be the faithful who flock umpteen temples or the simple folk whom you find performing their rituals by Ganges in Haridwar, Benares or other holy places. The portraits have sandal paste marks on forehead which is typical of the culmination of Puja or prayers. Renu and most of us in India come across daily the burgeoning faith in simple people who have daily communion with their Gods in one way or the other. The soft light from monochromes adds a mystic spirituality. The eyes often hold you captive with kind soft innocent direct look to the viewers. These are the portraits of people who though poor inhabit the vast rural spaces of our country.
Renu, her husband and two lovely daughters are all artists. When you visit Studio Vasant for Renu’s exhibition you have the bonus of beautiful works of her two lovely daughters on display. Incidentally her younger daughter is differently abled and her art and imagination are quite promising.

This evening event will bring together writers, students, scholars and the community in the celebration of the vibrant life of Punjabi at UBC and in Greater Vancouver. The event will be accompanied by a more general celebration of South Asian studies at UBC, featuring plays and other student performances in Hindi, Punjabi and Sanskrit on the afternoon of April 4 (from 12-4:30 pm). Activities include:
A Public forum
The central activity of the Celebration will be a public forum on a topic of particular local interest related to the Punjabi-language community of Greater Vancouver. This year, we have invited Alyssia Ayres (Ph.D. University of Chicago) to provide a keynote address on Punjabiyat in Pakistan, and a panel discussion of local Punjabi radio personalities.
Awards ceremony
Awards will be granted to student essayists, one on the high school and one on the college level, and to a local author, as an overall achievement award.
Community gathering
The event will begin with a reception, providing an opportunity for students and their families, writers, professors, and teachers of Punjabi to gather together to honour Punjabi in Vancouver, and discuss issues of the day. It will end with tea and a poetry reading by the writer receiving the award.

Ayesha Ali is a mathematician by profession and teaches at the Lahore School of Economics, she started her classical vocal training with late Ustad Nazir Ahmad Butt and more recently has been in the tutelage of Ustad Hafeez Khan Talwandi and focusing on Dhurpad Gaiki.
Talwandi gharana is considered to be the most ancient proponent of Dhurpad music in Punjab and have continued the tradition to date.
Ayesha Ali will explain the theory of classical vocals and demonstrate various forms of Dhurpad singing as practiced by the Talwandi Gharana, she will be accompanied by Muhammad Ali Faridi on Tabla and Asad Malik on harmonium.

Icchra was one of the suburban villages of Lahore (along with Mozang, Nawankot, Baghbanpura etc.) till the early twentieth century.
It is conjectured by some to be the site of ancient Lahore itself, and the name Lohari gate is considered a corruption of Lahori gate as this gate faced Icchra to the south of Lahore.
Icchra was the site of a major Hindu temple ‘Bhairon Ka Asthan’, and in recent history, home to the Khaksar leader Allama Mashriqi and Jamaat i-Islami leader Maulana Maudoodi.
It is also famous for various specialized bazaars and dense old neighborhoods of Lahore.

Sufi Kathak is a classical Indian dance form created by MANJARI CHATURVEDI. Sufi Kathak Foundation is a non-profit registered society founded by Manjari Chaturvedi to create awareness for Sufi Kathak and other related ancient performing art traditions. The Foundation works towards providing scholarships to students pursuing classical music and dance, and also pension and medical insurance to needy artists.
The aim of Sufi Kathak Foundation is to promote spiritual dance and music and world cultural unity, also initiating children and orienting the youth to become self-employed through arts – dance and music, and evolve a humanist outlook. Abdul Hameed Kachhawala, better known as Baba Mheeda, is one of the last remaining gavantris or bards of his kind. Now in his 70s, Baba Mheeda still sings with energy and vigor for up to three hours at a stretch.
Strumming his king with the right hand and keeping rhythm with a khartal in the left, he has a massive repertoire of qissas, vars, hymns and humorous songs.
Unlike most gavantaris who sing only the well-known passages from qissas, Baba Mheeda can sing Sassi, Veer Jodh, Sohna-Jaini, Poorn Bhagat to name a few, in their entirety.
Belonging to Amritsar district, Baba Mheeda learnt the art from his father after migrating to Pakistan.

71. Calendar Art Exhibition, New Delhi, Jan 19 to 30/09
Red Earth and Apparao Galleries present an exhibition featuring artworks by contemporary artists on the theme of Calendar Art. The project also features the launch of a special art calendar for 2009 featuring the artworks.
The ubiquitous and eclectic genre of Indian calendar art has formed the mainstay of popular visual culture in India. It covers a range of themes, notably, Religious Calendars, Patriotic Calendars, Filmic Calendars, and Landscapes / Decorative calendars. The exhibition will feature works on the above themes executed by contemporary artists in their individualistic style, all with a contemporary twist.
This project is yet another effort of Red Earth to present art in newer formats, and make it more accessible. The calendar is also designed to become a pointer to the kaleidoscope of festivals, seasons and celebrations in India throughout the year.

2. Music Concert, Punjabi Poetry Recital
Ayesha Ali accompanied by Sian Yousaf on Iktara will present selection of poetry from from Classical Punjabi poets on 29th November 7pm. The program will begin with short presentations by three young students, Sitar recital by Dua Nadeem; Flute recital Razi ullah & Waqas Ahmad.

As the fourth of our city walks we would like to visit the Baghbanpura area- in particular the mazaar of Madhu Lal Hussain (the 16th century sufi poet), and the mazaar of Baba Hasan Din (this one a beautiful brick building designed recently by Kamil Khan Mumtaz). These are both in very close proximity of Shalimar Bagh- so the front parking lot of the Shalimar will be our meeting point.

In the painter’s dark room, something is emerging, new formations, new combinations, new mutations…It is the new alchemy, the explosive new meeting of painting and photography.
The exhibition seeks to present the work of a group of young painters who are incorporating photography in their painting practices in newer, dynamic ways. Trudging away from the common and fashionable genre of photo-realistic works, these painters embody fresh approaches to merging photography in painting: by creating photo-imaginary works rather than the photo-real. Rather than painting echoing the photographic, here painting plays with the photographic. Photographic source material and / or processes are transformed in painting practices and the richness and symbiosis of mediums creates this new form of contemporary painting, the photo-imaginary.

Commemorating a Century of South Asian Presence in Canada
Events from November 17-23, 2008
South Asians first arrived in Canada at the end of the nineteenth century, and by 1908, approximately 5,000 were reported to be resident in British Columbia. That year, the Canadian government introduced the Continuous Journey requirement seeking to prohibit further South Asian migration into the country.
In 1914, Gurdit Singh, a Punjabi, chartered the Komagata Maru and a group of 376 South Asians passengers sailed to Canada to challenge this racist law. Although they were forced to return to India, they dealt a serious blow to the ‘Keep Canada White’ policies of the white settler society.
A group of South Asian academics, activists and community groups have come together to organize a week-long series of events in November 17-23, 2008, to mark over one hundred years of South Asian presence in Canada, and to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Continuous Journey requirement. These events will pay homage to the struggles waged by South Asian communities in the past, celebrate our achievements, and build alliances as we face the challenges of the 21st century.

We encourage full participation by the Sikh Community so that I, as Bindra Chair of Sikh Studies at Hofstra University, can show to the Dean, Provost and Vice Chancellor that there is a strong interest in this area, in order that they may invest in building future courses. Such courses and concerts bring academic representation, respect, integrity, and reflection upon the Sikh tradition that can only benefit us all. The Sikh tradition has so much to offer the world about toleration, celebration and respect for diversity that it is a tragedy in today’s troubled times not to raise awareness about the Sikh Guru’s teachings. These courses are very timely given the continued media misrepresentation of Sikhs, and general ignorance of the wider American public; too many Sikhs have been victims of hate crimes based upon mistaken identity. The public needs as much education as possible about who Sikhs are and how glorious and profound their tradition, scripture and service to humanity has been.
I would very much appreciate your help in spreading awareness about this course and concert at Hofstra University. Please encourage your sangat to register for this course (and future ones) for a poor attendance will signal to the University that Sikh Studies in general and courses in Sikh Music in particular are not areas to invest in. If Salvador Allende were alive today he would be 100 years old. If he had not been elected President of Chile in 1970 many of his ideas about a profound political and social change for his country would have perished. The main Chilean natural resource – copper – would not have been nationalised. The American companies that exploited it would not have embargoed the exports when refused compensation due to excessive profits.
Allende’s government should have lasted 6 years but the opposition did not allow his transformations to happen and succeeded in overthrowing him via a ferocious military coup in 1973. Various human consequences of this recent history of a Latin American country are here for you to watch in the films selected for our Allende’s Festival. The protagonists and the sensitivity of their filmmakers will certainly leave a mark on those who come to the screenings.

Grade 10 student and inspiring youth from Toronto. His activism includes “Hood to Hood” to unify youth especially in working-class immigrant communities and Toronto Haiti Action Committee.

Registerd nurse with a UBC doctorate in Education (Policy and Leadership). She is the President of VIRSA, a community non-profit that addresses South Asian youth violence.
HARSHA WALIA:

Noise of the Past presents two new related commissions produced from a creative call-and-response method to cast a different light on war and the art of dialogue.
Unravelling (2008, 17 mins) is the result of a unique film-making process, creatively working with poetry, archive materials, visual art and music. Internationally acclaimed Nitin Sawhney (http://bit.ly/sawhney) composed a new score in response to an original inter-generational poetic dialogue in
Urdu between Sawarn Singh, a WWII Indian soldier who fought for the British in Burma, the Middle East and Africa, before moving to the UK, and his grandson, Kuldip Powar. Working with this haunting score Powar directed an evocative and searching film.
Francis Silkstone has also taken the inter-generational poetic dialogue as the source of inspiration for Post-Colonial War Requiem, a new score to be performed in interaction with the phenomenal space of Coventry Cathedral.
Benjamin Britten’s original War Requiem inaugurated the newly-built Cathedral in 1962, offering Remembrance without militarism. Though consciously inclusive, it did not reference the contributions of the (now former) colonies.

Emory Douglas was former Minister of Culture in the Black Panther Party throughout the Party’s existence making him a long-standing senior leader of the Black Panthers. Emory Douglas designed the Party’s newspaper and created most of the Black Panther propaganda art. Emory Douglas is without exaggeration one of the most important cultural contributors to the struggle of oppressed Black people in the US.
Billy X Jennings is a veteran ex-Black Panther and helps to run projects for ex-Panthers in the Black Panther Alumni.

About the artists:
Naseeruddin Saami (Karachi)
Ustad Saami, a Khayal vocalist from Pakistan, belongs to the Dilli gharana of Hindustani classical music. His family migrated from Delhi to Karachi in 1947, and went through difficult times to pursue and preserve the music tradition they had inherited for last 700 years from the famous musician-poet Amir Khusrau of Delhi. Ustad Saami learnt from various ustads including his uncle Munshi Raziuddin who also taught Qawwali to his sons, the famous Fareed Ayaz qawwals of Pakistan. Ustad Saami performs with his sons Rauf Ahmed and Urooj Ahmed.
Noor Zehra Kazim (Lahore)
Noor Zehra, born in Lahore, has been learning Sitar and Veena from various ustads including Shareef Khan Poonchwale. She performs on Sagar-Veena, a unique instrument developed by her lawyer-musicologist father Raza Kazim, who has been working on this instrument for over 36 years, and aims to re-create a mode of emotional communication through this instrument. Sagar-Veena has been performed at various occasions in Pakistan, Japan and other countries. This is the first time the instrument has been brought to India.
Ustad Nafees Ahmed (Karachi)
Nafees Ahmed Khan is an accomplished Sitar player from Pakistan. Equally proficient in solo and accompaniment forms of sitar playing, his strength is his command over rhythmic interplay. He learnt his art from his father, the illustrious Sitar Nawaz Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. As a young boy, he was first trained as a vocalist. His gharana of Kapurthala (Punjab) is known for its Gayaki Ang. He has traveled extensively and performed all over the world. Currently he is the head of the Music department at the National Academy of Performing Arts, Karachi. In his position, he is very keen on this collaborative project.

31. Exhibition ‘The Punjab: Moving Journeys’, London, Sept 9–Nov 27
The exhibition reveals the ‘Punjab’, a region spanning India and Pakistan. The complex history of this region and its modern significance are explored from the perspectives of five UK community groups with links to both countries.
The ‘moving journeys’ of successive generations of Punjabi people, both within and across borders, are explored.
Community organisations who contributed include Cartwright Hall Young Ambassadors (Bradford), the Muslim Women’s Welfare Association (Ilford), the North Hertfordshire Sikh Education Council, the Satrangi Group (London), adults and elders from the UK Punjab Heritage Association and the Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail.

30. South Asian Project, Six Degrees Of Separation Exhibition and OddSpaces Project, 4-20 09/08
The South Asian Project is a show that will commemorate ten years of Triangle Art activities within the region. The shows will open simultaneously at their respective venues all across South Asia – Khoj, Britto, Theertha and Vasl.
Faisal Anwer’s project will connect all these 4 art spaces for 5 days and run alongside the art show. The artists participating are a selection of artists who have traveled participated in the workshops and residencies in the network.
For the South Asian show the artists will show a recent and an old work done by them in their residency/workshop they attended. A catalogue of the whole South Asian Project will be published later.

NIMRA BUCHA has acted on stage and radio in Pakistan and the UK. She was actively involved in and performed with Baang Theatre, an actor’s collective in Pakistan before she moved to London. African Lens, The Story of Priya Ramrakha commemorates the work of a remarkable photographer who defined his career by embracing the people and events of Africa as a personal subject. One of Africa’s first international photojournalists, Ramrakha traveled the continent, documenting the lives of ordinary people for the world press.
In 1968, Priya was killed while on assignment for Life magazine, covering the civil war in Biafra, Nigeria. He was 33 years old.
Since his death, Priya’s work has never been displayed. His stunning portraits of African life were never exhibited. His photographs for Life magazine were never republished. Until now, his story has never been told.
The film features rare archival images and newsreels from 1950’s and 1960’s Africa, as well as interviews with various photographers, journalists and historians, including Morley Safer (CBS News), Dr. Ali Mazrui (African Studies scholar), the late Achieng Oneko (Editor of Ramogi Newspaper), Chester Higgins Junior (New York Times photographer), Paul Theroux (author), and Peter Sissons, (former ITN correspondent.)

‘Super Patrons and Morons’ is written by Raisedon Baya and Leornard Matsa, and originally produced in Zimbabwe by Rooftop Promotions. It is a political satire about a ruling political party and its despotic leader, and is set in a country suffering from severe food shortages, fuel and food queues coupled with a repressive government infamous for using the state security to silence dissenting voices.
After several performances in Zimbabwe, the play was banned in the country but has toured most countries in Africa and Europe. In 2007, it was short-listed for the Freedom of Expression Award by Amnesty International UK.
“The play challenges audiences to think about how and when to take personal action to bring about political change, especially in the face of economic and political violence,” said Don Wright, Executive Producer of the play, and a staff member of the local chapter of Amnesty International.
The Vancouver production of ‘Super Patriots and Morons’ is directed by Pasi Gunguwo, and features Jean Pierre as the President of the Super Patriots – the ruling party, and Carlos Joe Costa as Bazooka, the president’s right hand man. Other cast members include Ezeadi, Patrick Onokwulu, Tendai Mpofu and Ruth Akefa Azu.
Director Pasi Gunguwo is a multi-talented Zimbabwean native who started as an actor and later received theatre training at Amakhosi Theatre Productions from Cont Mhlanga, one of the most fearless theatre directors in Zimbabwe, and widely known in that country for his Theatre for Community Action. Pasi has created and performed music for live presentations, and has worked in theatre and film in Zimbabwe, South Africa, the US and Canada. Locally he has served as the Artistic Director of the award-winning Britannia World Music Society. His African opera Muti Usina Zita (Tree with no name) is scheduled to premiere at Vancouver Children’s Festival in 2009.

10. Aitzaz Ahsan to speak in Washington DC
Advocate Aitzaz Ahsan, who has emerged as a revered leader of the movement for democracy in Pakistan, is scheduled to speak at Washington Pakistan Forum (WPF) of the Amnesty International USA on Thursday, June 26.
Advocate Muneer A. Malik will accompany Ahsan in the discussions involving the reinstatement of Pakistan Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other illegally deposed judges of Supreme Court and provincial High Courts.
Ahsan and Malik represent the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBAP) working to assure that the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan is upheld.

National Aborignal Day Events in British Columbia
This day was first celebrated in 1996 after the Former Governor General Roméo LeBlanc declared it as National Aboriginal Day on June 13. The demand for such a day was made in 1982 by National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) that wanted to declare June 21 as National Aboriginal Solidarity Day. Later, Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a National First Peoples Day in 1995; and in the same year, the Sacred Assembly chaired by Elijah Harper called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal peoples.
The National Aborignal Day offsets the week long celebrations leading to Canada Day on July 1st, 2008.

8. South Asian Peoples Unity Conference, October 2008
A conference is scheduled to be held in October 2008 in Toronto to forge unity among South Asians against the ‘Neoliberal World View’. Co-sponsored by South Asian Studies Program, York University AND South Asian Studies Program, University of Toronto, it is being organized by South Asian Peoples Forum (SAPF). The conference will take place over 3 days and will draw participants from the South Asian region and the diaspora.The theme of the conference is Left Unity.
SAPF organizers believe that progressive organizations and political parties in South Asia have numerous common region-wide issues in the era of globalization. We believe that we need to build a shared regional platform on principles of anti-neoliberal developmentalism and against dangerous militarization of our state and society. We wish to explore if issues of refugee, gender, economic, and food security, can be resolved within a regional framework. This conference envisions itself as a space where seasoned activists from differing national and organizational backgrounds can discuss such issues so as to strengthen future work and further the bonds of solidarity between our people over time. At the close of the conference, we will discuss how to disseminate the dialogues.

The organizers will provide assistance in obtaining Canadian tourist visas for attendees; and will cover all accommodation and related expenses in Toronto. 3. Entry fees: $20 for one short story or two poems. Entry fee includes a one-year subscription to This Magazine (current subscribers will have an additional year added to their subscription term). & Remembering Karachi May 12 Carnage
The crisis in the Pakistani judiciary that began over a year ago, with Pervez Musharraf sacking the Chief Justice on March 9 2007, still continues. In its wake, it has mobilized lawyers, students and social activists in unprecedented numbers, challenged the dictatorial and military rule of General Musharraf, and continues to haunt the political leaders at the helm today.
KARACHI – MAY 12 – 2007 A year ago, as the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry tried to make his way in to Karachi, the city burnt. Supporters of the defiant Chaudhry clashed with the pro-Musharraf Army and local political parties, leaving over 40 people dead, hundreds injured and a city of over 12 million engulfed in unprecedented violence. This event is to mark one year of that carnage, and explore different contexts of the judicial crisis. Tayyab Mahmud, Professor and Associate Dean at Seattle University School of Law, has published extensively in the areas of comparative constitutional law, human rights, legal history and legal theory.

1. 1. Second Annual International Coventry Literature Festival

This event, presented in English and Punjabi, will be chaired by Rakesh Bhanot, Subject Convenor, Creative and Professional Writing, Coventry University.
AMARJIT CHANDAN has published five collections of poetry and two books of essays in Punjabi. He has edited and translated 30 anthologies of Indian and world poetry and fiction, and brought the work of Brecht, Neruda, Ritsos, Hikmet, Cardenal, Martin Carter and John Berger into Punjabi. He was one of ten British poets selected by Andrew Motion, the Poet Laureate, on National Poetry Day in 2001 and participated in the International Aldeburgh Poetry Festival the same year. He has received lifetime achievement awards from the Punjab Government’s Language Department (2004) and from the All-Party Parliamentary Group ‘Panjabis in Britain’ (2006).

DALJIT NAGRA’s Look We Have Coming to Dover!, which won the Felix Dennis Award for Best First Collection in 2007, has been the most acclaimed poetry debut published in recent years, as well as one of the most relevant and accessible. Nagra, whose own parents came to England from the Punjab in the 1950s, draws on both English and Indian-English traditions to tell stories of alienation, assimilation, aspiration and love, from a stowaway’s first footprint on Dover Beach to the disenchantment of subsequent generations.

Ethiopia bans first nude photo exhibition, says it’s ‘pornography’

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia has imposed a ban on what had been billed as the Horn of Africa nation’s first exhibition of nude photography, the photographer behind the show said on Wednesday. Biniam Mengesha, 28, told AFP he had been planning to show 45 photos at the unprecedented exhibition – titled “Black Diamonds” – in the capital Addis Ababa from Friday through July 4.
“Authorities from the Culture Ministry asked me to submit my photos before the exhibition was inaugurated. Afterwards they said: ‘This isn’t art, it’s pornography,'” Biniam said.
“The photographs are fine art and include partial nudity aided by digital photography. Had it not been censored, it would have been the first in our country,” he added.
Biniam said he is arranging to show his images elsewhere in Africa in two months time.
Ethiopia is a largely conservative society, whose 81 million people are mostly Orthodox Christians and Muslims. – AFP
